Allergy testing is a medical procedure used to determine if a person has an allergic reaction to specific substances, known as allergens. These allergens can include food, pollen, pet dander, mold, or medications. There are different methods of allergy testing, with the most common being skin prick tests, blood tests, and patch tests. In a skin prick test, a small amount of the suspected allergen is applied to the skin, and the reaction is monitored for signs of an allergy, such as redness or swelling. Blood tests measure the presence of specific antibodies (IgE) that the body produces in response to allergens. Allergy testing helps identify the triggers of allergic reactions, enabling more precise treatment and management strategies, such as avoidance, medication, or immunotherapy.
